State Meet Highlights

Top Performances:

- Hunter Davila from Kelly Walsh put together a great state meet to show off his range. Davila was fourth in the 400 meters with 49.75 seconds, won the 800 in 1:53.95, won the 1,600 in 4:22.20 and also won the 3,200 in 9:31.20.

Chase Andersen of Natrona County went head to head with Carlos Salcido of Rock Springs and beat him in two of the three sprints where Salcido was the defending champion. Andersen won the 100 meters in 10.99, the 200 in 21.79 and was edge out of a victory in the 300 hurdles by thousandths of a second. He also won the long jump with 23-3.50.

- Carlos Salcido of Rock Springs may have been bested in the 100 and 200 but he owned the 400 meters, running 47.96 for the victory.

- Walker Newell of Campbell County swept the Class 4A hurdles races, winning the 110 hurdles in 14.61 and pulling out a photo finish victory in the 300 hurdles in 38.69. Newell also won the pole vault with 14-6.

- Maliya Crouch of Rock Springs was the top female thrower in the state and won Class 4A titles in the shot put (42-11.75) and the discus (128-4).

- Junior Brody Smith from Cody won the Class 3A 1,600 meters (4:18.58), won the 3,200 (9:21.29) and placed second in the 800 meters (1:56.19).

Julia Kay O’Neill, a freshman from Powell, won the Class 3A 400 (59.32) and 800 (2:17.02).

- Emily Reed from Cody was a four-event winner in Class 3A as she swept the hurdles and won the high jump and long jump.

Ann Wingeleth of Lyman was the star of the Class 2A meet with victories in the 200 (26.28), the high jump (5-8.25), the long jump (19-9) and the triple jump (37-10.25). She finished her career with 10 state titles and is also a standout volleyball and basketball player. She’s headed to the University of Utah for track and field.

- Junior Bailey Bard led Big Horn to the 2A girls title with wins in the 100 meters (12.90), the 300 hurdles (45.82) and the 4x100 relay. She was also second in the 200 (26.49).

- Jace Marx from Big Piney swept the 2A 100 (11.12), 200 (22.61) and 400 (49.75).

Savannah Phillips of Cokeville, a sophomore, swept the 100-200-400 at the Class 1A level for the second straight year. Jace Petersen, a senior at Cokeville, pulled off the same feat on the boys side. Cokeville, it should be noted, scored an incredible 194 points to win the boys team title.

- Zariah Tolman, junior from Burlington, won the Class 1A 100 hurdles (16.88), the 300 hurdles (47.67) and the pole vault (11-0).

Top Teams:

The Campbell County girls continued to dominate the 4A girls competition, racking up 143.50 points to secure the title. A relays sweep of the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 was a big step in the right direction.

Natrona County’s boys, likewise, also repeated as 4A champion. After a close finish in 2014, Natrona Co. scored 151 to blow the competition away.

Top Competition: It seemed like the 300-meter hurdles finals produced some of the closest races in the state championships. None was closer than the duel in Class 4A between Walker Newell and Chase Andersen, who both crashed the finish line in 38.69 seconds. Newell, of Campbell County, was ultimately ruled the winner over Andersen, of Natrona County.

Also, in Class 2A, it was Bailey Bard of Big Horn in 45.82 to Cayley Gibb 45.83 in a close hurdles race.
